As American servicemen began to return from duty in Japan and Okinawa they brought with them knowledge of a strange new fighting art they called karate. By the early 1960s karate schools were open in most states. While a majority of schools were content to recreate the oriental traditions of a few began to plant the seeds of change which has made the American adaptations of karate among the most powerful in the world.

World Karate International represents many interpretations of the empty hand fighting art. Included are ultra traditional dojos who prefer to trace their origins to Japan and Okinawa, and modern non-classical schools that more closely resemble kickboxing and MMA.
