Although most writers identify 1993, the first year of the UFC, as the beginning date for MMA a simple review of literature shows that the concept of mixing the martial arts for the purpose of increasing the potential to win dates back to the 1960s. It was fighters like Joe Lewis and Chuck Norris that first went outside their style to improve their fighting ability. Both Chuck and Joe were also coached by Bruce Lee. In his philosophy of Jeet Kune Do, Lee called for the creation of a martial art that had no limitations. The fighter, he reasoned, should not be bound by style but should be free to experience and adapt skills from any art that could make him a better fighter. It took almost 30 years for Americans to develop an easily understood format for developing a true “mixed martial art.”
A mixed martial artist must possess skill in three ranges including:
1- The MMA practitioner must display competence in kickboxing range. In this range you may research and adapt boxing, karate, muay thai, TKD, etc. kick and punches. Remember that the individual is always more important than the syle.
2- The MMA practitioner must display competence in trapboxing range. Trapboxing is a useful name to describe the act of “being in the clinch,” where you can hold an hit, sweep and take down. In clinch position you are too close to kick but you can effectively use knees and elbows and short range punches. Draw from boxing, wing chun, muay thai, jujitsu etc for suitable techniques.
3- The MMA practitioner must display competence in ground grappling range. This range implies being on the ground. Some MMA practitioners prefer to use the terms “ground-and-pound,” “submission boxing,” or simply “submissions” to describe this range. The BJJ, judo, ground-and-pound, and wrestling skills are often preferred when the fight is taken to the ground.
World Federation MMA is not by first choice a sport orientated organization. We do not plan to sanction MMA fights. Although the concept of allowing fighters, when properly padded and with safety rules enforced to match off using any weapon (not firearms) and any MMA range seems a possibility.
The mission of WFMMA is to bring the MMA methodology, the tactics, skills, training methods to the science of self defense. WFMMA is a self defense organization utilizing the MMA format.
To become a WFMMA member you must have as a goal to develop the three ranges of sport MMA plus you must also develop competence in a fourth category.
4- The WFMMA practitioner must develop competence in the use of training weapons for self defense. Kobudo, kali and other arts provide excellent training in weapons systems. Choose the arts you prefer.
WFMMA does not dictate which arts to use. We simply assist and encourage you to research and develop a successful MMA curriculum for your school.
The goal of WFMMA is to encourage schools to take advantage of the training opportunities to be found in MMA and to apply this training to the development of realistic self defense instruction. Sport MMA has become a billion dollar industry. Professional MMA athletes, sponsors and coaches invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into discovering and implementing advanced training methods. MMA teams have access to state of the art research and development of training and application programs.
We intend to assist the established martial arts community, including traditional and non-traditional martial arts schools in obtaining knowledge of MMA training and principles. The WFMMA encourages martial arts schools, regardless of your affiliation or art, to establish WFMMA curriculums as a separate art/program in you school programs.
As a WFMMA member you will receive the WFMMA newsletter with up do date information on how martial arts schools are increasing their revenue by opening a WFMMA class. In a recent survey we discovered that while sport MMA training appeals primarily to adults ages 16-30 the concept of training in non-sport MMA with the goal of developing superior self defense skills appeals to a broader cross section including youth (boys/girls) and adults (men/women). The newsletter includes proven methods to organize the WFMMA curriculum and to market your program.
The WFMMA linage is based on 20+ years of promoting the nations top MMA training camp. Over the years, Karate College members have had access to the top kickboxers, trapboxers and grappling experts in the nation. WFMMA members have access to Karate College instructional staff in both seminars and video. We are producing a curriculum guide to assist you in organizing classes that work.
